Pakistan: PoW Aerogramme Returned "No Unpaid Service"

This aerogramme form was handstamped “Prisoners of War / Free Mail” to indicate postage free service in communication to prisoners of war.

Postmarked LAHORE 22 AUG 72, the aerogramme was rejected “No Unpaid Service / Returned to Sender”. Arrival cancel R.L.O. Lahore 2 Sep 72, on reverse.

Israel: Short Paid Aerogramme

This 100 pruta aerogramme (Wiegand #10) was short paid because the aerogramme rate to the US was already at 180 pruta in March 1955. 

The aerogramme was handstamped "Affranchissement manquant / réclamé à l'expediteur" (Short paid / collect from sender). However, there are no additional franking and/or postal markings to tell about what happened with the aerogramme.

South Africa
Return to Sender

The aerogramme (Müller no. 30) was sent from KAPSTADT (machine cancel 19 III 1960) to a passenger onboard MV “Rotterdam” at Piraeus, Greece.

The aerogramme arrived too late to meet the vessel, which is indicated by the boxed h/s “Arrivee Apres Depart Du Paquebot”. Hence the aerogramme was returned to the sender.

Interestingly, the aerogramme was routed back to South Africa via Lisbon, Portugal. The endorsement “Devolver ao Remetente” is Portuguese for “Return to Sender”. There is a corresponding boxed h/s “Retour a l’envoyeur / Devolvido ao Remetente” in the lower left corner of the front panel and a cds of LISBOA 2 MAI 60 on the back panel.

"Return to Sender" from Switzerland

This aerogramme (Roggenkämper no. 56) was sent to Bern Switzerland in 1981. The postal authorities were not able to locate the addressee. They even ask the "Fremdenpolizei", an aliens' police department attached to the Immigration Bureau, for help. However, the Fremdenpolizei was not able to help.

Therefore, the aerogramme shows two "Unknown" handstamps. The left one ("UNBEKANNT / Fremdenpolizei der Stadt Bern") was applied by the aliens' police department, the right one  ("Unbekannt / Inconnu / Sconosciuto") was applied by the postal authorities.

Aerogramme sent from PORT HOPE (cds 14 11 49) to a post box address in Salisbury, South Rhodesia (today’s Harare). Transit via MONTREAL (cds 1949 NOV 15) on back panel [1].

Short paid 5 c, because the 10 c aerogramme was only prepaid for UK destinations.

Double the deficiency (10 c) converted into UPU gold centimes at a rate of 1 c = 3 UPU gold centimes. Hence, endorsed „T 30 ct“ and h/s „T“ 30 Centimes“. 

At arrival endorsed „Not Box 43“ in the lower left corner of the front panel to indicate that adressee and post box address did not match. H/s with pointing finger „Return to“

Returned via CAPETOWN, South Africa (cds RETURNED L.O. 6 DEC 49 on back panel) [2] by surface mail

On arrival in Canada the postal authorities applied a meter mark in red (MONTREAL JAN 18 50) [3], a boxed h/s „BUREAU DES POSTES / DEAD LETTER OFFICE / 18 I 1950 / No. 5 / MONTREAL, CANADA“ [4] and another h/s in red for a dead letter office [5], which is only partially visible.

The aerogramme got a second taxation (13 cents) on arrival [6], which is calculated from the original taxation (10 c) plus a 3 c surcharge incurred by routing the aerogramme through the Montreal Dead Letter Office.
