Australia, Aerogramme to Austria, Poste Restante Fee Paid

This aerogramme (Stein #A-8) sent from GUILDFORD 10 JA 57 to a poste restante address at Ostermiething, Austria (arrival cds OSTERMIETHING, 13. 1. 57, on reverse).

The poste restante fee was 30 gr. A 30 gr postage due stamp was affixed at Ostermiething and this amount was recorded in the post office's ledger. The aerogramme was not collected. However, the post office clerk apparently was aware of the whereabouts of the addressee. The postage due stamp was cancelled with blue crayon, the respective record in the ledger was deleted, a proivisional handstamp "Wildshut" was applied and the aerogramme forwarded to Wildshut, about 10 km from Ostermiething.

USA: Air Letter Adressed to Ship - Poste Restante Fee Incurred

This Air Letter (Wiegand #2a - Four-line admonition on back panel, "UNITED STATES FOREIGN AIRMAIL" in overlay is downwards on front panel and head first on writing panel) was sent from Detroit (JAN 27 1953) and adressed to a couple travelling on SS Orion from India to the UK to be picked up at Naples, Italy (arrival postmark 30. 1. 53, on reverse).

Someone, most likely the sender, endorsed in the lower left corner of the front panel "Due about / Feb 2". The Italian postal authorities treated this air letter as a poste restante (general delivery) item.

According to UPU rules, a country was allowed to charge fees on incoming poste restante mail if they levy a respective fee also for domestic postal items. The poste restante fee of 120 LIT was paid by two 10 LIT and one 100 LIT postage due stamps, postmarked 31. 1. 53.

UK Poste Restante Fee in France

This aerogramme (Greiner #10) was sent from WATFORD (machine cancel 25 JNE 1951) to a poste restante address in Strasbourg, France.

The UPU rules allowed a poste restante fee for incoming international mail if the same fee was in place for domestic mail, too.

A "T" handstamp was applied and a 10 f postage due stamp was affixed when the addressee collected the aerogramme on June 26.

Ethiopia / France
Special Fee for Poste Restante Service

Aerogramme (Müller/Wiegand 11d, Watermark IMPERIAL AIR MAIL “B”) sent from Ethiopia to Arbois, France, with the instruction “POSTE RESTANTE”.

Four 0,10 F postage due stamps were affixed as a fee for the “Poste restante” service.

The Universal Postal Union (UPU) rules allowed countries to charge a fee for incoming international mail sent to a poste restante (general delivery) address provided those countries also imposed a charge on domestic poste restante mail.

Israel and Italy
Postage due for "Poste Restante"

Aerogramme (Wiegand no. 22) sent from BET YIZHAQ, Israel (cds 1.9.63) to FLORENCE, Italy (arrival cds on back 4.9.63).

Tax-marked "T" on arrival and a 20 Lire postage due stamp was affixed. 20 Lire was the fee to be paid for general delivery mail ("Poste restante") when it was called for.

The Universal Postal Union (UPU) rules allowed countries to charge a fee for incoming international mail sent to a poste restante (general delivery) address provided those countries also imposed a charge on domestic poste restante mail. [1]
