Promoting Aerogrammes: A New Study on Postal Promotion for Aerogrammes

 

A study on postal promotion of aerogrammes has recently been published. The study lists and describes in detail meter marks, slogan cancels and the odd ephemera postal authorities have used to promote aerogrammes.

UK Advertising Poster for Aerogramme

A post office poster (original size about 22 cm wide x 28 cm high) promoting the new large format 6 ½ p UK aerogramme issued April 26, 1972.

Turkey: Stamp Booklet Pane with Advertisement for Aerogrammes

This 1967 stamp booklet pane from Turkey has an advertisement for aerogrammes in the uper left corner. The advertisement translates into something like: "This is cheap for you. Use aerogrammes".

Turkey: Aerogramme Advertising Slogan Cancel

Turkish advertising slogan cancel for aerogrammes of 1979. Unfortunately, the bottom text line is not fully readable but I think it reads "Kullaniniz".  Then, the text means something like  "Use aerograms".

This advertising slogan cancel "AEROGRAMMER / HURTIGT - BILLIGT" ("Aerogrammes / fast and cheap") was used in Copenhagen, Denmark, in June 1971.

Danish advertising slogan for aerogrammes (used Copenhagen 17 DEC 1949). As can be seen it the close-up below, it reads "AEROGRAMMET / årets julehilsen / til utlandet" (translates into something like: Aerogrammes / the annual Christmas greetings / to foreign countries).

Belgium: Advertising Slogan for Aerogrammes

This machine slogan slogan cancel was used to advertise aerogrammes. It reads "Luchtpostblad: / = / Economische / Vliegtuigpost" (Aerogramme / =  / Economic / Air Mail". The cover was postmarked ANTWERPEN 22. 4. 88.

The Netherlands: Advertising Slogan for Aerogrammes

This advertising slogan for aerogrammes ("luchtpostblad") was used in Amsterdam in August 1969. It reads "Een bericht per luchtpost? gebruik een luchtpostblad!" (A message by air mail? Use an aerogramme!).

Norway: Advertsing Slogan for Aerogrammes

This is a machine slogan cancel "BRUK AEROGRAM / DET ER BILLIG OG / KOMMER FORT FRAM" (Use aerograms / they are cheap and / travel fast) from Oslo (July 13, 1948).

The first Norwegian aerogrammes were issued April 13, 1948.

Hong Kong: Aerogramme Form - Advertisement Slogan Obliterated

This is a Hong Kong aerogramme form ("Form approved by postmaster General / Hong Kong No. 42", on reverse), which had an advertisement slogan printed at the bottom of the front panel. The slogan reads "AN / INVITATION / TO SAVE / FOR LATEST STYLES SEE INSIDE", see close-up below.

Avertisement slogans were not covered by the Postmaster General's permit, so the slogan needed to be obliterated by black bars.

Uganda: Slogan Cancel Advertsing the Use of Aerogrammes

This is domestic letter of Uganda, franked with two 10 c stamps of the 1962 independence definitives.

The letter was postmarked with the machine slogan cancel "AEROGRAMMES / CHEAPEST for AIRMAIL".

 

Uganda issued its first aerogrammes only in 2000. Before, aerogramme forms were used.

Turkish Aerogramme Advertising Meter Mark

At first sight, this cover does not look very interesting at all.

However, this is a meter mark advertising the use of aerogrammes in Turkey. 

Turkey issued its first (and as far as I know its only) set of aerogrammes on November 21, 1963. This meter mark is dated July 23, 1963 about four month before the first day of issue of the aerogrammes.

As the sender appears to be a private person, I think the meter mark was applied in a post office, to which the letter was submitted and postage was paid in cash.

The slogan text translates into something like "An aerogramme is handy and inexpensive".

As this blog is about aerogrammes here is one of the aerogrammes (#3) of the set that was issued in 1963.
