Ceylon: 50c Lioncel Issue

This is Wiegand #26, the 50c Lioncell issue of 1966, commercially used in 1969 to Pakistan. Only a small number of this aerogramme was printed. Much more were sold of the 1969 issue, which has the "Ceylon for Quality Teas" cachet in the lower left corner of the front panel.

India: Short Paid Aerogramme

This 6 AS aerogramme (Wiegand #5) was sent from Calcutta to Sweden on April 27, 1953. Endorsed "T" to indicate that the aerogramme was short paid.

Since March 24, 1953 the aerogramme rate to Zone III (Europe) countries was 10 AS. Hence, the aerogramme was short paid 4 AS.

As the Indian foreign letter rate was 4 AS 6 Pies at that time, double the deficiency (8 AS) was converted into 35.55 UPU centimes (at a rate of 4 AS 6 Pies = 20 UPU) ctms.

Sweden seems to have converted UPU ctms at par, yielding a postage due of 35 Öre which is endorsed on the "Lösen" postage due label.

Southern Rhodesia: Short-Paid Air Letter

Southern Rhodesia NGK# 3X/02 (vertical address lines on back, two sealing flaps, watermark "KENT VALE PARCHMENT "7") sent from Salisbury in May 1950 to Austria. Censored upon arrival and taxed with 6.75 Schilling postage due.

The aerogramme was handled as if the rate to Austria was 1 s, so the air letter was short paid 6 d. Double the deficiency (1 s) was converted into 80 UPU ctms at a rateof 3 d = 20 UPU ctms. In Austria, this amount was converted at a rate of 20 UPU ctms = 1.7 Schilling, so 80 UPU ctms = 6.8 Schilling.

India: "Air Mail Letter Card Service Not Available" to US

 

India #3 on grey paper sent from Bombay (12 FEB 47) to New York, US (arrival cancel March 24, 1947).

3-line handstamp "AIR MAIL LETTER CARD SERVICE / NOT AVAILABLE FORWARD / BY SURFACE ROUTE".

Air Letter Service was introduced to USA from 1st March 1947, vide DGPO Circular No. 78 dated 10th March 1947, at 8 Annas per air letter.
